Third, it is a good learning experience for kids in able to teach them about marine life.

Taking care of freshwater aquarium fish, however, can be challenging. If you have noticed, people seem to have grown accustomed to seeing their aquarium fishes die after several weeks or months of having them. The truth is freshwater aquarium fish can actually live for several years if they are given the proper care. Goldfish, for instance, have a lifespan of about 20 years. Unfortunately, many would find this unbelievable considering how short the lives of their goldfish have been. In fact, having the fishes in an aquarium will significantly lengthen their lives compared to when they are left to live in the wild. In an aquarium, they are better protected from predators and the harsh environment. The question now is, how do you achieve success in taking care of your freshwater aquarium fish?

Choose the Right Aquarium

The size of the aquarium is huge factor when caring for freshwater fish. Compared to the vast lakes where these fishes came from, an aquarium provides very limited space compared to what they were accustomed to. Therefore, make sure that you pick a large aquarium, especially if you plan to have several fishes.

Create a Healthy Environment for the Fish

Giving you fish a safe place to live and providing daily nourishment are not enough to keep them healthy. You also need to make sure that the water quality is consistently maintained. Remember that fish produce waste products. There are also decaying food matters from uneaten food. As these organic matters decompose, the water quality will slowly deteriorate. Installing a filtration system will keep your aquarium water clean longer. Aside from this, you also have to regularly replace the water with a fresh supply. You should also avoid overcrowding your aquarium and overfeeding your fish.

Get to Know Your Fish

Avoid buying aquarium fish just because they are pretty. Different fish species have different needs. Some require a slightly alkaline environment, while others prefer slightly acidic water. Having fish with different needs in one tank is a formula to disaster. Those that do not conform well to the water environment will definitely die. You should also learn how well the fishes react with each other. You might end up getting a fish that happens to be a predator of the other fish that you already have. It is best, therefore, to consult with the experts first or do your research before choosing the fish that you will buy.

These are just the basic tips in caring for freshwater aquarium fish. It is a learning process, but with dedication, you will eventually perfect the task and get to have a thriving little world of freshwater aquarium fish right in your living room.
